Marian Gliese - Visual Arts - Biography
I was born in Denmark in 1966 and lived in the suburbs of Copenhagen during the first 33 years of my life. In 1991, I completed a Master of Science degree in Pharmacy and at about the same time started to pursue painting as a hobby. During the years 1996 and 1997 I had two wonderful children. Together with my family, I moved to the USA in 1999 and spent the following years raising my children and painting in my spare time. My work with the paintings has grown into a full time pursuit of art since 2002.
My first structured learning experience in drawing and painting was during Middle school and into high school where I took classes in porcelain painting for 3 years under very skilled teachers from the Royal Danish Porcelain Company. An interest in art developed in high school when I saw two amazing exhibitions at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark: one featuring Magritte and another featuring Chagal.
During my years at the university, I went on travels in Europe every summer. Each time I would go to different countries and explore the nature, culture and art museums. I began to take up drawing and painting more seriously after a trip to Turkey in 1990. On this trip I met the Chinese-Canadian artist Yi-Tong Lok who inspired me to start painting. His advice and encouragement helped me get started.
In 1992 through 1993, I attended various drawing classes and studied oil painting under the Danish painter Annelise Jarvis Hansen. I immediately fell in love with the oil medium and knew that this was the right medium for me. After those couple of probing years, I went through some exciting years of artistic development from 1995 through 1998 where I worked on four different bodies of work and established my own personal style defining the future direction for my art.
Our decision to move to the USA in 1999 was partly based on a desire for the adventure of living in another country and partly to be able to spend more time together with the kids. The first few years after the move, I mainly spent taking care of my children and experiencing my new surroundings and its people.
In 2002, I started working on my art again and over the next couple of years it grew into an exciting full time pursuit. To refine my painting technique, I attended classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC during 2004 and 2005. Since then, I have had very productive and busy years with the creation, exhibition and sale of my art.
To accommodate my new career as an artist, I started Studio Gliese in 2004 together with my artist colleague, partner and husband, Ulrik Gliese, who creates thought-provoking and radiant photographs. Sharing the same passion and working together provides a very supportive and stimulating work environment, and it adds a unique dimension to our life together as a couple.
Today, I am very busy creating new artworks and making them available through galleries, exhibits and my website.
